judaism-mormonism

i never knew what yom kippur was and how horrendous a fast it is. as a child i thought we had it bad, in mormonism we go with out food and drink for 24 hours (but only without food and drink) AND 8-year-olds are encouraged to do so as well. i too would dream of oreos, soda pop, fried chicken, tuna sandwiches, and scrambled eggs with toast; not exactly what the program is supposed to gain for it's participants. seems should be a better way to reach heaven.

to bradley-10-8-2005 @12:20pm est--why leave the sex out? your grandkids probably know more about sex than you do so why not engage them in a conversation about it---it is most appropriate. kids won't get sex from the classroom but instead from their family, what a novel idea! you could help them out with any misconceptions they might have AND you might learn something in the process (and not just about sex) about them.

What a wonderful memoir and what a wonderful writer! I, too, remember the Yom Kippurs of my childhood as being days of dread, but Ms. Crain does such a good job of putting them in perspective that I am almost looking forward to next Y.K., so that I can "do it right" this time!

Great Article!

I am catholic and was curious as to the significance of Y.K. This article brought the point home. I loved it!

Yom Kippur

I like John Stewart's comparison of Yom Kippur (one day) and Lent (40 days). "Even in sin you're paying retail."

The Day of the Kipper

I learned about the Jews in history, and I learned about the Jews in Rochester. Great stuff!
