Okay Carl. You were actually funny this time. That's much easier to take than your fuzzy logic.

I wonder if you're cute too?

WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE?

I was in the middle of writing when i was cut off, now it could have been the fact that I said a few controversial things like why is it, when I read this I see so much negativity, why not give people the benifit of doubt and remember that we are not all here to judge but to offer our support to those lost, so I ask you, when we feel the need to complain about spammin, of all things, I am no one special just the girl next door and my father is a preacher and I know I am so far from perfect but complaining about spam, and how mad it makes you, well I must be honest with you by saying I don't care for it either but using the word HATE ,to me isn't what I would expect when looking and reading beliefnet, but hey to each their own but I ask you 1 last question, If spamming has you in this much of an uproar then you must be a lonely, sad person, not that I am judging you I feel sorry for you and the fact that of all the awful things happening in the world, spam is what we are discussing.GB,

Mike L: You're certainly free to call M. Volf "a bit naive" and "rather foolish" in his thinking. This is America, after all, and I hope that when your schedule takes you to Yale you will challenge him directly on the points you believe you've "effectively criticized" him. (Soma: Could you provide podcasts of that exhilarating debate?)

But here's what troubles me, Mike. It was a bit naive of you to expect "generosity" from me when I pulled you over and ticketed you for being a nitwit. I have received "rigid training" in identifying and citing nitwits, and to expect me to deviate from my sworn public duty was rather foolish. You didn't really think I'd let you go just so as not to "screw up your buzz," did you?

I would like to be kinder and gentler, Mike, but here's a news flash: the United States ranks number one in nitwits. And until we achieve a less embarrassing statistic, dedicated officers such as myself have a civic responsibility to uphold.

BTW: this is your second ticket.

In response to Carl T's post: Lets just say Mr. Volf may have well been trying to do more than one thing with the article. He clearly succeeds on your point. However the fact that he compared the Yugoslav police to the cops in the U S A would seem to incicate that he was also making another arguement. One that I have effectively criticized. But now I am afraid I have another issue. When Carl calls people who post things he disagrees with "nitwits" it would seem to indicate that he is one of those graceless individuals Mr. Volf is so right to criticize.

annointed message sir.

this is real a twenty first century message full of power to the church today, its the art of giving and sharing of possessions that sew the church together and thousands being added to the church daily. Being one of the ministers with the gift of reaching the needy in the villages here i find that this was my message to encourage my heart. ministers out there should practise this art and see how miracles and church frowth shall occur. God bless- Benson, Kenya

Soma publishes such smart material, it's a shame that so many of the people who post comments here are nitwits. I think Mike L. completely misses Miroslav Volf's point. Volf was contrasting the spirit of law versus the spirit of love, using his encounter with the cop to illustrate the inherent gracelessness of any kind of rigid legalism. I didn't think for a second Volf actually expected the cop not to do his job. The only naivete and foolishness I detect here is Mike L's!

While generally enjoying Mr. Volf's article I find one aspect troubling. It's seems to me a bit naive to expect "generosity" from a police officer in the situation he described. The poilce recieve very rigid training and to expect them to deviate from it is rather foolish. The procedure in question is in place for safety purposes, and as jarring as it was for Mr. Volf to be harshly confronted right on heals on his blissful "baby love time", does he really expect a professional to act unprofessionally so as not not screw up his buzz? The shortcircuiting of safety procedures in the name of generosity is problematic at best. It seems to me he could have come up with a better example. Also, his fondly recalling the kinder, gentler ways of the Yugoslavian Police overlooks one crucial aspect. The United States ranks first in the world in homcide by firearms. I dare say the former Yugoslav republic is not even in the top 50.
