Simon Cowell's Contribution to Culture

More than 63.4 million votes were cast in the American Idol finale.

Imagine if we could just get these people to give a shit about presidential elections. Better yet, imagine if we could educate them first, and THEN get them to vote in presidential elections. Wow.

The Grand Prize for American Idolatry

I think the prize for the winner of American Idol should be a one-way ticket to Baghdad. Then America might wake up.

Thou shalt sugar coat the truth...

Haven't seen American Idol but I've seen quite a few episodes of the British version. I can't remeber Simon Cowell ever saying, "I don't mean to be rude", but otherwise he's probably the same.

He's an example of why exhortations not to lie, a common religious and secular moral edict, always have to be taken with a pinch of salt. He's brutally honest and as remarked in the article he apologises when he thinks he's wrong, but he stands out because of it. Most complaints about him are that he's too harsh, not that he's wrong.

I've never been able to bring myself to watch "American Idol." It sounds too painful. Millions of viewers building these young singers up one week only to tear them down the next. But now I'm tempted to tune in.

It's strange to think that someone like Simon Cowell could restore the cultural importance of the critic. But why not? No one else who fits the bill reaches that vast an audience.

Great essay. Very perceptive. I also enjoyed the Cowel quotes the author included. I did an internet search for more Simon sayings, and I found this, for those interested:
