Part II of SoMA’s "Summer Soul Series"

The author says we need to "divest ourself of the notion of individuality". The is precisely the one thing the Protestant Christian has the most trouble doing. It is mostly all about ME and MY relationship with God from most Protestant perspectives (there are exceptions of course). On this count I think the Catholics have a much easier go of it. The notion of individual salvation is not really stressed in this branch of Christianity. One is saved by being part of the community, part of the Church. In this sense it seems much easier to incorporate the Buddhist insights that the author discusses with a Catholic perspective. One loses oneself in the community.

Having said this, I will say that all is not lost for the Protestant. There is the hope of being "hidden in Christ"(See Galatians 2:20) which is really the end of all mystical Christianity Protestant or Catholic anyway. I am hoping the author will take up this point in her next essay: The loss of self by merging with the "Guru"

Summer Soul Series part 2

Great stuff! Ideas we can all wrap our heads around regardless of what or who we worship. The lofty truths of life laid out simply and elegegantly. This Crain chick ought to write a book.
